If you don't like competitions, you might nevertheless like challenges, or just working on interesting datasets (there are plenty of them on those sites).

Be aware that incentives - including your own - are not the same when a site below is for-profit or not-for-profit.

         fusion and analysis of multisource remote sensing data, starts in January

         broad set of challenges typically focusing on engineering problems (e.g. inventing new materials) rather than pure data science issues

         continuous challenge, focus on automatic pixelwise labeling of aerial imagery
